The Complete Guide to Hydration Injections: Everything You Need to Know!

In recent years, with the continuous advancement of medical aesthetic technology, hydration injections have become a highly sought-after treatment. Many have experienced benefits such as deep hydration, pore tightening, wrinkle reduction, and skin brightening through this procedure. But what exactly are hydration injections, and how do they transform our skin?

Hydration injections, also known as Mesotherapy, are a type of injectable skincare treatment. During the procedure, a vacuum multi-needle device delivers nutrients like restorative collagen, hyaluronic acid, PRP growth factors, Botox, and other beneficial substances into specific layers of the skin. This process stimulates collagen production, allowing the skin to retain up to 1000 times its weight in moisture, revitalizing cellular regeneration and repairing damaged skin cells. In just a short time, it reshapes the skin, leaving it firm, smooth, and elastic.

The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (middle layer), and the subcutaneous tissue (innermost layer). The epidermis, often referred to as the skin barrier, is where most skin care products remain, absorbing only around 15% of nutrients. This limitation often leads to less noticeable results. Hydration injections, however, bypass the epidermis to reach the dermis, achieving an impressive 95% absorption rate.

Two Methods of Hydration Injections: Device and Manual

  • Device-assisted injections use vacuum technology to deliver hyaluronic acid and other moisturizing agents deep into the dermis, rapidly improving skin hydration.
  • Manual injections are ideal for areas requiring precision, such as around the eyes and nose.

Post-treatment hydration is crucial for optimal results, whether for blemish removal, acne treatment, skin rejuvenation, pore reduction, anti-aging, or lifting. Hydration injections with other aesthetic treatments can significantly enhance and multiply their effects.

Popular Combinations with Hydration Injections

  • Hydration Injections + Botox
Adding Botox to the hydration injection enhances its moisturizing effects while also smoothing fine lines, tightening mildly sagging skin, and minimizing large pores.
  • Hydration Injections + Tranexamic Acid & Vitamin C
These ingredients, commonly found in skin brightening injections, help hydrate the skin, strengthen cellular moisture retention, shrink pores, and brighten the complexion while fading dark spots.
  • Hydration Injections + PicoSure/PicoLaser
Combining Pico laser treatments with hydration injections can more effectively reduce pigmentation, eliminate fine lines, and improve overall skin texture for a brighter, smoother look.
  • Hydration Injections + Red/Blue Light Therapy
Hydration injections nourish the skin, regulating its oil-water balance. When combined with red/blue light therapy, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it effectively treats acne.

However, specific treatments are not recommended to be performed in conjunction with hydration injections. It is advisable to allow an appropriate interval between treatments for optimal results. Below is a detailed breakdown of these treatments.

Hydration Injections + Small Bubble Cleanse
  • Small Bubble Cleanse before Hydration Injections: These two treatments can be done simultaneously. The Small Bubble Cleanse deeply cleanses the skin first, removing impurities, dead skin cells, and excess oil from the pores. This prepares the skin for better absorption of nutrients during the hydration injection.
  • Hydration Injections before Small Bubble Cleanse: After receiving hydration injections, if there’s no redness or discomfort, you can undergo the Small Bubble Cleanse approximately one week later.
Hydration Injections + Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers before Hydration Injections: After getting hyaluronic acid fillers, it is recommended to allow about one month for the face to settle and heal before proceeding with hydration injections.
  • Hydration Injections before Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: These treatments can be done in the same session. First, receive the hydration injections, then proceed with the hyaluronic acid fillers.
Hydration Injections + Thread Lifting
  • Thread Lifting before Hydration Injections: After a thread lift, it’s advisable to wait about one month for the skin to recover before getting hydration injections, as the skin needs time to heal.
  • Hydration Injections before Thread Lifting: After hydration injections, it’s recommended to give the skin a recovery period of about 2-4 weeks before proceeding with thread lifting.
Hydration Injections + Fractional Laser
  • Fractional Laser before Hydration Injections: Following fractional laser treatments, it takes around 30 days for the skin to heal. It is not recommended to have hydration injections too soon, as it may interfere with skin recovery. Waiting for the skin to fully recover is ideal before proceeding with hydration injections.
  • Hydration Injections before Fractional Laser: The hyaluronic acid used in hydration injections has a low degree of cross-linking and is quickly metabolized by the body. The heat from the fractional laser can accelerate this process. Therefore, it’s recommended to wait at least one month after hydration injections before undergoing fractional laser treatment.
Hydration Injections + IPL Photofacial
  • IPL Photofacial before Hydration Injections: Both treatments can cause some damage to the subcutaneous tissue. If done together, it may overload the skin and lead to complications. It’s recommended to wait 1-2 months after IPL Photofacial before receiving hydration injections.
  • Hydration Injections before IPL Photofacial: Generally, it’s not advisable to undergo any laser treatments immediately after hydration injections. It is best to wait about one month between the two treatments.
Hydration Injections + Thermage
  • Thermage before Hydration Injections: Hydration is crucial after Thermage. If there are no special concerns, basic hydration injections can be done the following day. However, since the skin may still be delicate post-Thermage, it’s best to wait 1-2 weeks before receiving hydration injections if needed.
  • Hydration Injections before Thermage: After receiving hydration injections, since there are small needle punctures, it’s advisable to allow about one month for skin recovery before proceeding with Thermage.
Hydration Injections + Thermolift
  • Thermolift before Hydration Injections: It is generally recommended to do Thermolift first, followed by hydration injections. If there are no special concerns, basic hydration injections can be done the day after Thermolift to replenish moisture. If the skin requires more recovery time, it’s advisable to wait 1-2 weeks before receiving hydration injections.
  • Hydration Injections before Thermolift: After hydration injections, it’s recommended to allow about one month for the skin to heal before undergoing Thermolift.
Hydration Injections + Ultherapy
  • Ultherapy before Hydration Injections: After Ultherapy, it’s not recommended to have hydration injections immediately. Typically, a one-month waiting period is necessary before undergoing hydration injections.
  • Hydration Injections before Ultherapy: Approximately one month after hydration injections, you can proceed with Ultherapy. Swelling typically occurs for 2-3 days post-injection, and it usually takes 3-7 days for it to subside. Full recovery usually takes about a month.
Hydration Injections + Fotona 4D
  • Fotona 4D before Hydration Injections: Since the recovery period for Fotona 4D is relatively short, hydration injections can typically be done about a week after Fotona treatment.

Hydration Injections before Fotona 4D: If no complications arise, you can undergo Fotona 4D about two weeks after hydration injections.

Important Considerations for Hydration Injections

  • Hydration injections are not permanent. The injected substances are gradually metabolized by the body, meaning the effects are temporary.
  • Post-Treatment Care:
    • Apply a medical dressing immediately after the procedure, and use an ice pack if needed to reduce swelling.
    • Avoid water exposure for at least 12 hours post-treatment, but you may use a sterile spray.
    • Gently cleanse the face within 3 days; avoid rubbing or scrubbing. For one week, refrain from using hot water, saunas, or hot springs.
    • Use mild skincare products for one week, and avoid products with whitening, anti-aging, or acne-fighting ingredients.
    • Avoid excessive smoking, alcohol, and spicy or stimulating foods for one week.
    • The optimal recovery period is between 2-7 days post-treatment. During this time, use medical dressing and repair products at least once a day.
    • Protect your skin from the sun by using sunscreen and carrying an umbrella. Try to avoid going outside during midday in the summer.
  • Contraindications:
    • Individuals with severe heart conditions or heightened sensitivity to pain.
    • Those with abnormal blood clotting or currently on anticoagulants.
    • Individuals with active skin inflammation or herpes infections.
    • Those allergic to topical anesthetics.
    • Women who are pregnant, menstruating, or breastfeeding.
    • Individuals with hormone-dependent dermatitis flare-ups.
    • Cancer patients, among others.
